Established around the 10th century BC, Ephesus was an important settlement during Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman periods. The ancient city is famous for its important structures such as Temple of Artemis, Library of Celsus, Great Theater, Temple of Hadrianus, Terrace Houses and St. John Basilica.
The Temple of Artemis is considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world and the statue of Artemis found in here is one of the symbols of Ephesus. The Library of Celsus is the third largest library of the ancient world and it attracts attention with its magnificent façade and architecture. The Great Theater is one of the largest open-air theaters of the ancient world with a capacity of 25,000.
Ephesus Ancient City was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015. Archaeological excavations and restoration works are still ongoing and it is a popular destination for tourists from around the world.
